There are a lot of things I was thinking of writing about this week. The death of Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, the beginning of spring training and college basketball upsets all crossed my mind.
But unfortunately, because of the snow I got a little too tipsy and forgot to watch the news or do anything to get myself acquainted with those subjects. I was too busy messing around in the snow to write about any of those topics. So what better to write about than the wonderful world of WAC winter sports?
For those who are fans of racing, there is the adventurous sport of e-brake driving. Only experienced drivers should attempt this maneuver. When driving in an open lot where there is a good slick surface of snow apply the emergency break and cut the wheel.
This will result in a 360, 270, or as I call it, a "donut." Be sure that you are in an open area where you don't risk hitting anybody or anything (telephone poles, snow drifts and Dr. Cades are major turnoffs). Done correctly, it can entertain for hours.
For a more challenging sport, bust out the Frisbee and play some snow golf. The concept of frisbee golf is simple: a hole is established and the player to hit the designated hole in the fewest tosses of the disc wins that hole. Playing it in two feet of snow adds a nice twist to the game. If desired, a par can even be set for each hole and score can be kept through an entire round.
To make this more interesting, add a backpack of beer and play "loser has to drink." When playing snow golf, be alert both to where you throw your disk and to the presence of Public Safety snowmobiles-there is nothing worse than a lost Frisbee and an open container citation.
The final and most daring of all winter sports is snow jumping. This is not for the faint of heart. To participate in this sport, one needs about two feet of snow and a platform to jump off that is about fifteen feet from the ground (the balconies in the new dorms are good for this).
Then just let gravity do the rest. The snow should be deep enough to allow for a soft landing. Try to avoid landing on concrete or anything else that may ruin your weekend.
When snowed in, don't feel like you have to sit inside drinking and watching TV. Go outside and enjoy yourself!
Make the most of the blizzard. Don't feel that you have to try any of the sports I mentioned (in fact you may be healthier not trying them), but do go out, walk around and enjoy yourself.
