SAM’s Looking For REAL Athletes

Shawn Hampt

This year, the Student Athlete Mentors are sponsoring all their usualal activities, but they are also including one brand new program. This new program is called the REAL Challenge.
The goal of the Challenge is to unify each WC sports team in the community, in academics, and in inter-campus relations. The Challenge will consist of is a points system (more or less a tally system) for each sport. Each team throughout one full year will earn the points.
How does one get points and why is it important? The specifics are still being worked out about point values and such, but the points will be awarded to each team for taking part in the WC academic community as well as the Chestertown community, and being academically involved. Going to sporting events, not just one or two, but at least one of every sport!
Teams will be expected to attend one of each sporting event in a year… not too hard. In the Chestertown community there will be clean ups to take part in and other types of community service projects.
Academically, points will be awarded for teams that have athletes that take part in honor societies and have good GPA’s. Points will also be awarded for the win/loss record.
Now why is this important? Because this program is going to help the Washington College Athletic community become unified. This unity will build a supportive network throughout the Athletic Department and between the teams that will in turn promote success for athletes on and off the field.
The SAM’s need all of you athletes to help support this inaugural program to make it a total success. And if you need any more reasons to participate than improving the unification of the Athletic Department, there will be a trophy along with a barbeque for the team that wins at the year’s end. So come and help not only your SAM’s but also each other and make WC sports one large family!
The SAM’s will be sponsoring a guest speaker, Jeff Janssen, on February 26th in Norman James Theater at 7:30pm. He will be discussing ways of team building, leadership, and peak performance. This is the perfect opportunity to start earning those REAL points!
Hope see each sports team on February 26th and throughout the year at sporting events and community projects. Do not sit on the sidelines!
