The Shorewomen took on Stevens Tech on March 18 in a close game. The Shorewomen lost 13-12 in a three-overtime game.
"We played Steven Tech last season in the ECAC tournament and won, so we knew it would be a tough and exciting game," said senior Diana Martin. "Unfortunately, we did not come up with the win this year. It was a well-played game by both teams, and we played hard until the end. We have a very talented team this year, and we are ready to begin our conference games and come up with some big wins there."
Stevens Tech took the early lead 6-2. The Shorewomen rallied to bring the game within one goal, 6-5, by the end of the first half. Washington continued scoring as the second half of play began. Sophomore midfielder Emmy Hyde scored two goals and senior attacker Casey Sawma scored one to give the Shorewomen an 8-6 lead with 24:08 left to play.
Stevens Tech ended the Shorewomen's scoring run with 23:39 to play to cut the Shorewomen's lead to one. With 22:00 left to play senior attacker Janet Studdiford scored off a feed from junior attacker Lindsey Eichner. Eichner found Studdiford again with 15:17 to play, giving the Shorewomen a 10-8 advantage.
Steven's Tech then went on a three-goal run to lead the Shorewomen by one.
Neither team scored again until Studdiford posted a hat trick off of an assist from Eichner with 25 seconds left to force overtime.
"It was a really good game, we worked hard but unfortunately we didn't come out on top," said Eichner. She continued, "It was the first time we have gone into overtime and it is a learning experience for the team and hopefully we will come out on top next time, everyone played great and we are really coming together as a team."
Stevens scored the only goal of the first extra period, but the Shorewomen evened things up in the second overtime as Eichner found Studdiford with 1:12 to play to force the sudden-death third overtime. Stevens Tech finally was able to score the game-winner in the third overtime ending the close match up.
"I thought that our game against Stevens Tech was one of the best games our team has ever played. Even though it's a loss in the book we pulled together when we needed to and made some key plays," said Hyde. "Everyone knows that when you get tired and you feel like you can't run anymore you have to find that passion to push yourself and everyone did. The problem was that we played a really strong second half but didn't come out ready in the first half, so we spent the second half trying to make up for our mistakes."
