The WC Sailing team traveled to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD last weekend to compete in three separate events: the MacMillian Cup, the MAISA Freshman Championships, and the Faye Bennet Trophy.
Washington sailed in its first ever off-shore event just last month in order to qualify for the MacMillian Cup at the MacMillian Cup Eliminations. As opposed to the one and two person boats that WC sailors are accustomed to racing in, MacMillian Cup races were sailed in eight person "Navy 44s."
Sailing offshore for the second time in team history, seven sailors represented WC at the MacMillian Cup, the nation's oldest collegiate sailing regatta. WC participants included sophomore Alex Hood, sophomore Parker Mitchell, sophomore Chase Hillyer, sophomore Oliver Barnyak, freshman Seth Olson, junior Matt Lyman, and senior Tyler Raven. Alex Hood served as Washington's skipper at the regatta. Notably, Washington finished second of nine teams participating at the Cup.
Washington was represented at the MAISA Freshmen Championships by freshman skipper Nick Larmore, freshman crew Colleen Kelly, freshmen skipper Derek Packard, and freshmen crew Nina Penman.
The Larmore-Kelly pair finished second in the A division at the Championships, placing top five in 13 of 16 races and tallying two first-place finishes. Packard and Penman finished sixth overall in the B division, tallying six top-five finishes.
Because Washington placed in the top seven, it qualified for the Atlantic Coast Freshman Championships to be held in two weeks.
The last of the events that the WC Sailing team participated in last weekend was the Faye Bennet Trophy. Freshman Jenn Tonks and sophomore Meredith Dodd both represented WC at the event. The Trophy consisted of 16 races, 11 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday in similar conditions to those at the MAISA Freshmen Championships. Tonks took 16th while Dodd placed 21st of 28 sailors participating in the event.
The sailing team will return to action next weekend when it competes at the War Memorial, the MAISA Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championships, hosted by Old Dominion.
