Both the men and women's rowing teams traveled to Philadelphia, Pa. last Saturday, October 29th, to compete in the Head of Schulykill Regatta. Washington College entered boats in the women's open four, women's championship open eights, frosh/novice open eights, men's open four, and men's pair.
Sophomore coxswain Ashleigh Genevich, along with senior Cassie Ann Slentz, sophomore Kelly Spicer, sophomore Hayley Taylor and junior Erin Jones, competed in the women's open four at the regatta. The team finished the race in 16:49.37 and placed 14th of 37 boats entered.
The Three Rivers Rowing Association took first in the competition, while Pittsburgh took second and was the fastest collegiate finisher.
The women's rowing team was also represented in the championship open eights race. Senior Katie Cooper was coxswain of the open eights boat, while senior Katherine Wilson sat stroke, senior Leslie Meredith sat in the seven seat, junior Jeanne Clark was in the six seat, sophomore Laura Ratz sat in the five seat, junior Blair Haring sat in the four seat, senior Betsy Davis sat in the three seat, junior Megan Walburn sat in the two seat, and sophomore Courtney Jenson sat bow.
The WC open eights boat placed 17th of 22 teams and finished in 14:31.17. Navy took first place in the championship open eights competition.
Finally, the women's rowing team also entered a boat in the frosh/novice eights competition. The team finished 21st of 57 teams and consisted of freshmen Elizabeth Thorpe, Tori Weitzel, Ruby Tuesday Griffiths, Jamie Beaber, Julia Rorer, Emily Bands, Elizabeth Andrews, and Allie LaVigne.
The men's rowing team was represented in the men's open four and men's pair at the regatta. The men's open four boat completed the race in 14:44.84 and placed 15th of 44 teams. Senior Tom Murray served as coxswain for the open four boat, while junior Andrew Bright sat stroke, junior Ed Mundy sat in the three seat, junior Adam Askham sat in the two seat, and senior Mike Philipp sat bow. George Washington University was the first place finisher in the men's open four race.
Sophomores Hugh McAdam and Chris Broadwell entered the men's pair at the regatta. The team finished 11th of 13 boats and completed the race in 16:23.60.
The novice rowing team hosted the Tapke Chase at home on the Chester River the next day, Sunday, October 30th.
