T.O. And Eagles: Just Another Messy Break-Up

By Peter Knox
Elm Columnist

Unless you get your drama from daytime television instead of Sports Center, then you know the situation. T.O. must G.O. and he's not going easily. Terrell Owens has forever been a liability on and off the football field. He's mocked Dallas as a 49ner and the Ravens as an Eagle. He is one of few in football history to score over 100 career touchdowns, and many of those touchdowns were followed by equally entertaining dances.

I've always felt that if T.O. wasn't scoring those touchdowns for my team, I'd hate him and now not even his own team wants him. As good as a football player T.O. is, imagine how bad it has to be for the Eagles (currently last in their division) to suspend him for four games and pay him one million dollars more to stay at home the rest of the season. If the franchise feels that strongly (in Andy Reid I trust), then I cannot have any sympathy for the loud-mouthed receiver that feels oppressed by the organization.

Let's see how obvious this was coming: T.O. signs on for last year, plays a few games before getting injured and sits out while the Eagles get to the Super Bowl. T.O. plays this championship game and loses, blaming quarterback McNabb. This summer he is sent home for a week of training camp, comes back and blames McNabb again for the team's 2005 record, as well as slamming the organization for not recognizing his 100th career touchdown.

This guy doesn't know how to just play football and shut the hell up. No matter what your job is, you don't publicly bash a team leader for their performance - doing it several times even. When the team asks you to apologize, you do it before you get suspended, not after. And I don't care who you are, even if Dallas beats the Eagles (tenth time's the charm), you don't wear a Dallas jersey in Philly - especially if you PLAY FOR THE EAGLES!

Coach Andy Reid reached his boiling point with the hot-headed receiver, saying "We gave Terrell every opportunity to avoid this outcome," and you know they did. However, as an Eagles fan, I took the news positively; bad blood out. If the team feels strong enough to go to such lengths to keep T.O. from playing, they must be supported. And besides, we're Eagles fans - we don't hesitate to worship a player one game and boo him the next. Even the pizza delivery guy left the $5 dollar tip T.O. gave him on the player's doorstep. We only care about the team. And T.O. has gotten far too big for the team.

So T.O. can keep his Dallas jersey, he'll never play for the Eagles again. And meanwhile, his own jerseys can't sell for $5 - expect to see them piled on his doorstep too.
