The Washington College women's basketball team finished off a disappointing season Saturday with a loss to McDaniel College by a score of 84-47.
WC dropped to 5-20 on the season and 2-16 in conference play. McDaniel's win boosted them to the Centennial Conference playoffs with a 12-6 record in conference, 18-7 overall.
The Shorewomen continued to be led by sophomore point guard Elise Conway with 11 points and five steals in the game.
Conway was a welcome surprise to the team this year, as she transferred to WC from Virginia Wesleyan. Freshman Brenda Lucas added eight points off the bench for the Shorewomen, along with six rebounds, to lead the team. Brianne Slizofski, also a freshman, scored six points and snagged five rebounds. Junior guard Regina Barrett knocked down two three-point shots to add six points as well.
Despite their record, Coach Gail Gilchrest believes that the team is still going to be able to take away a lot of positive things from the season. Gilchrest emphasized that the girls always gave 100 percent and really bonded as a team this season.
That enthusiasm and teamwork will propel the Shorewomen into next year because they have built that solid foundation.
For a team absent of seniors, there were many young surprises this season. Freshman guard Brianne Slizofski emerged as an aggressive player and finished the season as the fourth leading scorer and fourth leading rebounder. She will be a valuable asset to the team in the years to come.
Elise Conway sparked the team in many ways this year as well, leading in points, rebounds, steels, assists, and blocks. She showed her leadership both on and off the court and impressed coaches and teammates alike.
LaToya Turner "turned it on in the second half of the season, with a strong showing on the offensive end," said Gilchrest. Turner will be a senior next year and a critical part of the team.
Freshmen Brenda Lucas and Kaitlyn Roth were second and third, respectively, in rebounding on the team. They impressed their coaches with their power underneath, despite having to go up against girls much bigger than them.
The Shorewomen can now set their sights on next season, when they hope to break into the top of the Centennial Conference with their veteran team.
