After clinching a playoff spot at home against Swarthmore, the Shoremen basketball team traveled to McDaniel to take on the Green Terror on Saturday. In a hard-fought game of back-and-forth rallies by both teams, McDaniel outlasted WC 94-89.
McDaniel was lights out from the field, shooting 52 percent from the field and a blistering 57 precent from three-point range.
McDaniel was led by Will Talesnick, who scored 31 points in the McDaniel season finale.McDaniel, unlike the Shoremen, did not make the playoffs this season.
The struggle for the Shoremen was not rebounding or turnovers, as the difference for both teams was insignificant. The Shoremen were abysmal from three-point range, shooting 22 percent and 4-18 from behind the arc.
"Over the course of the year our shooting percentage has struggled away from Cain; we need to get that straightened out before the playoffs," said Senior Eric Blumenthal in regards to the Shoremen shooting struggles.
Additionally, the Shoremen free-throw shooting, which normally is a strength, failed the Shoremen on this date. The Shoremen were 17-29 and shot 58 percent from the charity stripe.
"Coach has us shooting lots of free throws and concentrating on defense in practice this week to right the wrongs of the past two games," said Freshmen Guard Tim Kohlrus.
The post players for the Shoremen were stellar. Joe Breslin had 18 points and 10 boards, and Jonathan Webb led the Shoremen with 23 and 10 rebounds.
The Shoremen hosted the Muhlenberg Mules in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday, defeating them 85-79.
Junior Forward Joey Breslin scored a game high 29 points and Senior Forward Jonathan Webb banked 22 points for the Shoremen.
It was WC's first playoff game in four years.
