Merry Christmas.
I said it.
I didn't say Happy Holidays. I didn't say Happy Hanukkah. I didn't say Happy Kwanzaa. I said Merry Christmas because I celebrate Christmas.
According to a poll conducted by Fox News, 96 percent of all Americans celebrate Christmas, only five percent celebrate Hanukkah, and less than two percent celebrate Kwanzaa. (Some Americans celebrate more than one holiday.)
And retail stores are recognizing the facts this year.
It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but we all know how the big stores work during holiday seasons. I started seeing pumpkins, scary masks, and ridiculous discounts on simple sugars as soon as September came. It's no surprise that stores including Wal-Mart, Macy's and Kohl's have already issued statements regarding their stance on Christmas.
According to MSNBC, such statements are a response to quot;mounting criticism from religious groups that staged boycotts against Wal-Mart and other merchants after they eliminated or de-emphasized 'Christmas' in their advertisingquot;.
In an interview on quot;The O'Reilly Factor,quot; Julie Roehm, Wal-Mart's Senior VP of Marketing and Communications, noted that 84 percent of Americans shop at Wal-Mart during the holiday season.
From a business perspective, Wal-Mart is making the right move. Given that the majority of Americans celebrate Christmas, it's absurd to ignore such a predominant consumer base. The trend of catering to minorities in our country needs to stop.
Christmas should be recognized and celebrated, not ignored. And Wal-Mart is doing just that.
Unfortunately, not all of our favorite stores agree. Best Buy is still stuffing their stockings with political correctness. The company simply refuses to formally acknowledge Christmas.
Dawn Bryant, a Best Buy spokeswoman, commented, quot;We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them.quot;
Dawn will be getting coal this year.
