Forget about Flight of the Concords - they're too busy. Gym Class Heroes wasn't, so they're coming to Washington College for the spring concert.
On April 13, the band Gym Class Heroes will give a concert on campus. They are, according to Chip Hiden, President of the Student Events Board, "the most popular band we could get for a reasonable amount of money."
The Student Events Board tried to get Flight of the Concords, which was most popular in a survey taken among WC students.
But Hiden said, "They are involved in a TV show at the moment and thus not available for concert." But he added that he "is planning to make them come next year."
Gym Class Heroes is not a bad substitute. They are winners of the 2007 MTV Music Award for the best new band. Almost everyone can sing along with their most popular hits "Cupid's Chokehold" and "Clothes Off!" which were played on the radio all last year. "Cupid's Chokehold" also ranked number five on last year's Billboard charts.
The concert will take place in the LFC and doors will open at 6 p.m. It starts at 7 p.m. with two opening acts and will end at about 10 p.m.
The Student Events Board wants to increase the audience from the 900 people who came last year to 1,500 this year. They hope to achieve this through a better promotion of the event.
Hiden said, "We are planning to promote the event not only at other schools, but also we'll make an announcement in the local radio station."
Tickets for the concert will be on sale starting March 20. They will be available in Martha Washington Square, the Office of Student Activities, the bookstore and, according to Hiden, "probably also at the stadium during games."
They will be $19 for WC students, $21 for staff and faculty, and $25 for non-students. Even the students who don't get a ticket beforehand can still get one at the door for $25.
Hiden also said that they might be able to give away "two meet-and-greet passes," enabling students to meet with the band after the concert. But they still have to "negotiate this matter with the band's manager."
In any case, Student Events Board has planned to give away prizes such as "t-shirts, autographs, and posters of the band for the best-dressed students" during an all-campus spirit week from March 29 through April 5.
