SIFE Career Fair Helpful to Students

Elm Staff Wrter

After four years of building, Career Fair broke all previous records. Since 2005, between 10 and 20 employers attended each Career Fair. The 2008 Career Fair more than doubled, with over 40 representatives, who came to WAC looking for students from all majors.

Megan Rainey, Student In Free Enterprise co-president, said "I think more students came out because of the larger amount of employers and also the increase in the variety. Having the Career Fair in Cain Gymnasium made it easier for students and employers to engage in conversation."

Over 220 students attended the Career Fair. The fair provided a great experience for students from all years to gain experience looking for jobs or paid internships as early as their sophomore year.

Senior Kelly Spicer said "it was a great chance to talk with employers and gain experience which made me more comfortable with the job seeking process."

Many of the employers commented on the professionalism and preparedness of the students. Exit surveys showed that employers appreciated the changes made to the fair.

Some employers were anxious to make call backs to students they were impressed with. Nike even conducted on-campus interviews during the Career Fair. Some students scheduled interviews with potential employers.

The Career Fair is intended to help all students, from every major, find internships and careers. After all, the purpose of college is to land a job, so help us bring in the employers you are looking for.

During the next few days, SIFE students will review the student exit surveys and compile the suggestions for improvement. If you have any additional suggestions or recommendations for employers you would like to see at next year's Career Fair, feel free to contact SIFE co-president, Brenda Lucas at blucas2@washcoll.edu.

The Career Fair has been brought to you by a joint effort of the Center for Career Development and SIFE. Special thanks goes out to Jim Allison and the Career Center, S.A.M.S., Louie Richardson, Rob Nugent, Susanne Kelly, Jerry Roderick, Tori Weitzel and her family, Buildings and Grounds, OIT, and everyone else who contributed to the success of this year's Career Fair!
