A new roof is being installed into the triple-wide trailer that caught on fire last Friday.
According to Reid Raudenbush, Director of the Physical Plant, the structure was donated about nine years ago by Board of Visitors and Governor Member, Doug Croker, and is used for student furniture storage.
Raudenbush said that in preparation to store the furniture coming out of Gibson 100 and other student housing no longer in use next year, a new tar-mineral sheet roof was being placed on the trailer.
The trailer roof first caught on fire from a beam and was put out earlier that afternoon.
"It seemed to be out...Obviously, it wasn't," said Raudenbush.
According to Raudenbush, around 6:30 p.m. that evening two individuals walking behind the LFC noticed smoke and Public Safety was called. The fire department returned and flooded the roof with water.
"The cause was a smoldering ember from the re-roofing operation. Sometimes you get an ember or something that's still glowing. It often happens when a fire company comes and thinks it's out," said Raudenbush.
He added that the building, located by the LFC's back entrance, is still in use and the fire didn't burn through the roof.
When asked about future roofing plans, Raudenbush said, "Now it really needs a new roof...That's what was being done anyway so those plans are just continuing."
