What Is It About Sports?

BY SEAN RAPELYEA
Elm Sports Editor

What is it about sports fans that will make them watch live feeds on the internet to see how their pitcher they just bumped up from the minor leagues is doing? Why do sports fans feel the need to watch Sportscenter in the dining hall? Why do we wear jerseys if we are in our rooms watching the game by ourselves, because our roommates will make it a point to talk trash throughout the entire game? There is no need for answers to any of these questions. That is, if you are a sports fan. If not, a passion for sports can be explained several ways.

First of all, there are different levels of importance of sports and they all serve a purpose. The majority of college students I know have some loyalty to at least one college football team, one pro football team, one baseball team, and every now and again you get some hockey fans. There are obvious exceptions to this example, but this is just your average sports fan. Not to forget the NBA, I am not sure I know anyone that watches basketball before a couple weeks before the all-star break, and then there is another break until playoffs. Long seasons separate the wheat from the chaff. Basketball, hockey and baseball all have extremely long seasons, but this is the reason ESPN runs Sportscenter multiple times in the day and all the guys cheer in the dining hall when the Top Ten plays come on and give their best rendition of an umpire calling a strikeout pitch.

Seasons mesh together, and for a sports fan that has a varied palate sometimes it is necessary to come home from a long day of doing whatever and watching whatever sport might be on as a way to unwind. Somehow testing your wits against your buddies about stats, players, records, league standings, where pro players went to college or if they came straight out of high school into the big leagues found its way under the relaxation umbrella, but it is certainly the case.

The best method to avoid any embarrassment is to sit back and soak it in and when you get home to get online and do a little recreational research on all of these facts. Depending on your nap schedule, certain sports just catch you at the right time. If you put on a golf tournament and turn the volume down to just above a whisper, so the only real thing you hear is the thwack of Big Bertha drivers and the occasional soft clap, this is the perfect method to lull you to sleep for at least an hour or more.

Sports are changing and it is exciting to see new fans get excited for what is up and coming. UFC and MMA fighting are growing larger and people are buying more fights on pay-per-view than they have in previous years, in comparison to boxing. Someone from Maryland can shuck off the growth of lacrosse pretty easily, but it is expanding to every corner of the country and new college and pro teams are popping up everywhere. Any sport that is exciting and televised will have fans that will watch the game rain or shine or in the confines of their living room, or in the computer lab on a live feed, or in the dining hall on ESPN, just for the love of sport.
