WC Men’s Lacrosse battled the Salisbury Seagulls in the annual War on the Shore game. This year, the game was held at the Shoremen’s home turf last Saturday. The weather was great for a lacrosse game: it seemed as if summer was just around the corner with the sunny sky and an 85 degree temperature outside.
The Shoremen and Seagulls battled back and forth all game with a tight score. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied at 10. Both teams were determined to win the game as they fought even harder in the last quarter. Unfortunately, the Shoremen could not hold on to their lead as the Seagulls won the game 12-11. The 11 goals scored by the Shoremen were made by senior Matt Moreton (3), sophomores Doug Herdegen (3) and Josh Perlow (3), and senior Jimmy Kielek (2). Both teams proved to be extremely even, judging by the similar game statistics. Both teams had the exact same amount of face offs won, which demonstrates the equal ability of both teams. The Shoremen only had one more shot than the Seagulls (36), while the Seagulls had one more save made (12). Shoremen goalie and senior Gordon Cohen had a strong first quarter totaling five saves, and was able to finish strong for his team with 11 saves total.
The Shoremen have noticed much improvement in their game since the beginning of the season. On Saturday, the team grabbed more ground balls and committed fewer turnovers; ground balls were not won as frequently by the team in earlier games. WC is anxiously awaiting playoffs so they can use their skills that have been achieved throughout the season to hopefully come back with a victory.
Most of the Washington College campus enjoyed watching the lacrosse game. It is visible by the sunburned shoulders and faces that many enjoyed their time on Saturday. It was a good break from academic studies, as this may be some students’ last weekend of free time before cramming for exams which will take place May 4-8.
Freshman Sam Buzaid comments on her first War on the Shore experience, “I expected War on the Shore to be exactly how it was. It was so much fun with hundreds of people and a tail gate. The lacrosse team played an awesome game and left the Salisbury fans with nothing to say back to us. I’m so excited for next year; it was one of the best weekends I have had so far at WAC.”
The Shoremen have made it to the first round of playoffs and will be playing Gettysburg at Haverford University today. This marks the 9th consecutive playoff appearance for the Shoremen. We wish the Shoremen the best of luck as we all hope they come home with a win!
