It’s a weekday morning and you still have the whole week of classes ahead of you until you are free on the weekend. You get up for your 8:30 class, throw on a sweatshirt, and head to class. You step outside and you notice something strange on your face... a bead of sweat.
You wipe your forehead and look up and see the sun shining in a cloudless blue sky. Suddenly, the fact that it is Tuesday does not seem so bad after all. Excited, you rip off your sweatshirt and stroll to class in a t-shirt and shorts. We are all happy to say, summer is here!
The first week of summer is usually a time where students like to catch up on much needed sleep and enjoy relaxing in the warm weather. Although, after this “lazy” period is over, we begin to desire something much more fascinating. The beach is a hotspot, but what else is there to do? Go to the mall with friends? Go to endless summer parties? There is so much more to summer than that so here are a few ideas to spice up the dog days of our favorite season.
So, you are at the beach… go fly a kite! Some people may think that this is very childish and immature, but once you have tried it, you won’t think it is so bad. It’s relaxing to be outside on a breezy mid-afternoon, yet it is the perfect way to get out of the beach house to listen to the ocean in the background and feel the wind on your face. While it may be relaxing, it is a little bit difficult as well! It is not as easy as it looks to keep a kite flying in the air while the wind is trying to blow it in every possible direction!
For those who like sports, try sponge football. This is the same as the typical game of football, yet it is much more fun when the football is replaced with a soaking wet sponge. This fun game will be sure to provide much laughter and will be even better on an extremely hot day!
The next one may seem simple, but you will find much enjoyment in it. Take a walk. Go around your neighborhood, or even better, go to a local trail. Get some summer tunes for your iPod, or go with a friend and talk while you stride. Going for walks can help clear your head and it is great to experience all of nature in that sense. Especially if you are in your neighborhood, and you think you have seen it all, I’m sure you will notice a lot more than when you simply drive by.
Lastly, spend time with your grandparents. I know you think you never have time to or don’t feel like going to their house for hours, but it would make them much happier than you could ever imagine. Plus, you will most likely get a great meal out of it… for free! All your grandparents want to know is everything going on in your life… and who can complain about talking about yourself to someone who actually cares and pays attention?
You could bring a deck of cards with you to play with your grandfather, or tell your grandmother you want to learn how to make her famous cake (even though she will never give away the recipe). By doing this, the appreciation will go a long way.
These are only a few things to do in the summer that can take up your time in a positive manner. There is so much more to do, but these are a few good starters! Enjoy the long break and be sure to keep in touch with all of your friends!
