Professional Baseball: Oh, the Possibilities...

By Christian Matthews

Elm Staff Writer

With the pennant races on the verge of completion, it has become quite evident who the two best teams in baseball are in this action packed fall.

The defending Champ Philadelphia Phillies are one win away from sending the L.A. Dodgers back to Mannyville, CA, while the heavily favored New York Yankees are ready to crush the miracle Angels’ hopes for a World Series title.

The Phils and Yanks have both been on cruise control since the regular season ended, but are ready to shift gears, should they face off at the end of the month. Now, the real challenge begins, trying to figure out what might just happen if these two colossi do meet on center stage.

This series could go many different ways. Each team has at least one October stud on the mound, very good supporting cast members in their staff, and a closer who has proven himself in the post season, this could easily turn into a pitching duel for the ages!

But on the flip side, when it comes to offense, neither of these teams have many shortcomings. Led by Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees have scored 37 runs this postseason, so far, and that’s in only seven games. With 14 home runs as a team, they have been on a torrid scoring binge this fall, and see no reason to let up until they get title number 27. Bolstering a lineup with a hefty price tag of over 208 million dollars, championship or bust was an idea etched in their brain during spring training, and if they continue to play as they have been, the Steinbrenner crew may finally have their thirst for another championship quenched. Either way this series turns out, pitchers duel or an offensive shootout, the Yanks have all the pieces in place to bring it all home, that is, unless the Fighting Phils have anything to say about it.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been written off all season (actually written off as fluke winners last year by some) but never seem to let it get to them. After cutting Rocktober short, they are on the verge of finishing off the new look Dodgers in a dominant fashion. The only thing that seems to be standing in the way of their repeat are the high powered New York Yankees.

Don’t think for a second this team is going to roll over for this juggernaut, they have the artillery to bring this driving force down. Swinging hot bats and throwing even hotter heat from the mound, these Fighting Phils are showing the world that this is not a one horse race. They have brought their big bats to the October showcase this year. In only eight games so far, they have scored a whopping 45 runs these first two rounds and have won in dramatic fashion. After shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ latest late game heroics, the Phils have all the confidence they need, and the skill along with it, to bring home their third championship.

With the stage set, the audience waiting attentively, and the baseball Gods smiling down on their masterpiece of a series, all that is left to do is…wait and see what happens.
