Downrigging this Weekend

by Alice Horner

News Editor

Among the opening of Hodson Hall and participating in Halloween festivities this weekend, don’t forget to walk down to the waterfront for Downrigging Weekend.

Eight Tall Ships will be docked in the Chester River and will be open to the public. These ships have come from different areas along the East Coast. For example, the Amistad is a recreation of the ship La Amistad, which carried African slaves.

The celebration begins Friday with a talk by Pulitzer Prize Winner Hedrick Smith, “Poisoned Waters: Chesapeake Bay to Puget Sound” at 5 p.m. at the Prince Theatre. Admission is free. A Downrigging Concert with “Them Eastport Oyster Boys” is at 8 p.m. at the Prince Theatre. Admission is $15.

The Tall Ships will be illuminated from 6-9 p.m.both Friday and Saturday, and fireworks will commence at 7 p.m. on Friday. During the day, take advantage of the public sails available for $15-$55, depending on the vessel. The sails begin at 10 a.m.on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Free demonstrations on ship construction and engraving will also take place during the day on Saturday.

So get out of that dorm room and take advantage of the historical and the beautiful that the Chester River has to offer this weekend.
