If you haven’t been to the Career Center yet, then your time has passed. It is closing due to lack of attendance, funding, and general disinterest.
The above statement is a lie. The Career Center is still open and still hoping to help you out. Another lie you might have heard is that you have to make an appointment to speak to any of the advisors in the Career Center. Not true. You can email jallison2@washcoll.edu or vsawyer2@washcoll.edu any time you please. Any questions or resume help can easily be translated over e-mail. Begin now, because time is running out and before you know it, the fall semester will be behind us. The poor Career Center staff is stuck in their offices long after we head home for the holidays and before we return, so correspondence can’t be cut short. For some odd reason, Vicky Sawyer and Jim Allison really do want to help. Email them. They may try and sucker you in to coming in for an appointment, but you can get out of it. Baby steps.
In the meantime, November has begun and while Halloween might have whittled away at some more of your brain cells, Thanksgiving is right around the bend. Perhaps you can fill in some calories where those brain cells left open space. This year, our Thanksgiving break includes Wednesday. You may be the type who says, “Well shucks, now I have to spend more time with my family.” While one can hope that this is not the case, be reminded that winter break is much longer, and the golden period when parents are just happy to have you around again doesn’t last much past New Years.
If you’ve gotten up there in your years here at Washington College, you should know by now that things at home change while you’re away. Your friends may have visited their school’s Career Centers and left you in the dust, munching on leftovers and driving your younger siblings to ice skating rinks. Get a job. Get an internship. The best excuse to get out of family stuff is making steps toward no longer draining your parents’ bank account.
The best time to start looking for jobs over winter break is now. Thanksgiving break can be a huge help. Talk to local businesses at home that may need a bit more help over the holidays. Go into your favorite store and see if they need any extra holiday help. Making connections is key to not living at home, wallowing in debt after graduation. Sorry to go for the jugular there, but college does come to an end and grad school is not the same.
On the sweeter side though, the spring and spring semester are on their way. The spring semester tends to feel much longer than the fall, and you can always start worrying about your future then. Maybe the economy will be better. Maybe it won’t. At least we have a nice new student center (hich is really close to the Career Center. Please go there.).
