The Secret to The Flash Face

By Emily Perry

Elm Staff Writer

Alright ladies, it is that time of the semester. The weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter. Coincidently, the less daylight we see, the less effort we really want to apply to our looks. So today, I’m going to challenge you to resist walking out the door in sweat pants.

One part of the morning that has potential to take the longest is our make up. A good compromise is to create one solid look that gives you a healthy face in minutes, and in return you could take those ten minutes and apply them to your wardrobe time. What are the basic fast face essentials? Read carefully.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the most important thing you can do to create a healthy looking face and a flawless look is moisturize. You should first make sure your face is free of any bacteria and then apply the right moisturizer for you.

You could pay thirty plus dollars on a department store moisturizer, but on a college budget you can always look to your local drugstore. Dove Essentials Day Moisturizer is a great face lotion that includes a healthy dose of SPF and is great for normal skin. You could also try Suave Skin Therapy body lotion, which doubles as a great face lotion.

If you are prone to acne you could look to Clean and Clear’s Dual Action Moisturizer, which contains salicylic acid to help unclog pores which causes acne. However, you must be careful not to put the Clean and Clear moisturizer too close to your eyes, and this particular moisturizer is not meant for people with sensitive skin.

After your moisturizer has dried, it’s time to apply foundation; you’ll want to apply a lightweight formula that blends well into the skin. Look for a formula like Cover Girl Clean Liquid Foundation Make-Up. This product provides blendable and buildable coveragewithout clogging up your pores.

I realize your skin is not perfect. Because of this, make sure you invest in a good concealer. You can use a liquid or a solid concealer. If you choose to go with liquid, try Cover Girl Fresh Complexion Under Eye Concealer. However, if you prefer a solid and thicker concealer try Neutrogena Healthy Skin Smoothing Stick Treatment Concealer.

To make sure your make up doesn’t melt or sweat off before the end of your first class, look for a powder that removes shine, sets your foundation, and polishes your skin. My personal favorite is Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Powder. It’s talc free, and gives your face a fresh look without looking like a dry and flaky powder-puff.

For the accents of your face, you’ll want a good eye liner and a great mascara. For a standard day-to-day look I always advise brown or black, find a soft liner that is versatile. Versatile means you can use it for a hard line, or a soft, smudgy and perhaps smoky line. Try Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus eyeliner which has a smooth tip at one end and a smudger on the opposite end.

For the finishing touch you’ll want to put on a great mascara. For thick and plump lashes go for Maybelline New York Volume Express Mascara which will create a thick and voluptuous lash line. If you prefer a cleaner effect, opt for Neutrogena’s Clean lash tint, which will simply accentuate the natural beauty of your lashes and your eyes.

The end of the day is always a relief, so make sure that when is all said and done you have a good make up remover so you aren’t sleeping with your make up on and clogging your pores, which makes you more prone to acne. I suggest Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, which will take off all your make-up including your stubborn waterproof make up.
