This past Friday, Nov. 13, the movie audience got to experience the thrill ride that is the latest in a long line of global disaster movies: “2012.” This movie derives its name from the belief that, according to ancient Mayan calendars, the world will end and apocalypse will reign approximately on that year.
With a cast of John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, and Thomas McCarthy, it is sure to be a rousing success. However, it seems that not everyone is satisfied with this film. IGN.com, a movie database, says that “it throws so much stupidity at you in rapid succession that it’s practically a torrential cliché maelstrom.” According to the website, the plot is the same found in movies similar to this one, where a catastrophic disaster rocks the entire world and a group of brave but complete strangers must work together in order to survive.
The phenomenon that occurs is neutrinos from a massive solar flare have penetrated the Earth and are causing the temperature of the core to increase rapidly, thus causing earthquakes and the like. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but hopefully it’ll be better than the critics make it out to be.
