Art Gallery Enjoyed by CMS Students
Dear Editor,
On Nov. 10, Chestertown Middle School took a field trip to the new Washington College art gallery. The students ate at the dining hall, which they loved, and then they went to the Kohl Gallery. They looked at the works of art in and around the building. The guide was Dr. McColl. He was awesome with the kids, and they all loved the trip and could not stop talking about it. The students also wrote an essay about it, and it was easy because they all loved it. We also want to give a special thanks to everyone that made this happen.

Dear Editor,
As an alumna of Queen Anne’s House, I was very interested to read about the latest discussion of the substance-free policy in the Nov. 6 issue of The Elm. This article, however, does not seem to provide a balanced view of the issue at hand.
All of the students interviewed and quoted in the article are male residents of the first floor. I lived in Queen Anne for four years, and I would agree that most of the residents of this floor share the opinions of substance-free living expressed in the article, but the view from the second floor was very different. Most of the female students who lived with me over the last four years, including myself, chose to live (or were satisfied by living) in this environment expressly because it is substance-free, and we deeply valued this as part of our residential experience at WC.
While it is true that some students do curse the world when they find that they have been assigned to Queen Anne’s House, this does not in any way represent the opinions of all the residents of Queen Anne, and to include the voices of only one segment of the resident population of Queen Anne provides a slanted view of the situation and misrepresents what substance-free living means to this campus. I respect Carl Crowe for pursuing a more holistic approach to wellness living at WC; I would urge the Residential Life Staff to seek to maintain a substance-free environment of some form for the benefit of those students who are committed to this way of living.
