The Washington College Shoremen picked up some much needed momentum heading into their second conference meet this Saturday against Franklin and Marshall. The Shoremen were able to pull off big wins against in-state rivals Salisbury and St. Mary’s.
The Shoremen owned Salisbury, winning all eleven events in the Shoremen home opener. This win continued the streak of dominance over Salisbury with the 19th consecutive win over the Sea Gulls.
Freshman A.J. Feurer became the eighth fastest Shoremen swimmer in winning the 1000 freestyle. Feurer took second place in the 500 freestyle, falling short to junior Matt Violette who also won the 200 individual medley. Senior Chris Soper and sophomore Austin Auger joined Violette in winning two individual events each and setting season-best times in all events. Soper took first in the 50 and 100 freestyle while Auger took the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Senior Dylan Pollock had a season best in his first place finish in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Nick Longworth took home first in the 100 backstroke. The Shoremen also won both relays, with sophomore Johnny Helenek joining Longworth, Auger and Pollock in the 400 medley relay, with Soper, Longworth, and Pollock joined by Violette winning the 400 freestyle.
It was not as easy for the Shoremen against St. Mary’s, but they were able to hand the Sea Hawks their first defeat of the season. Violette, Soper and Auger were at it again, each winning one individual event. Pollock and Longworth repeated their performances from the last meet to give the Shoremen two more first place finishes. Junior Tim Beadell joined Longworth, Violette and Pollock to win the 200 freestyle relay.
The Shoremen face big-time pool rival Franklin and Marshall tomorrow at the Casey Swim Center at 1 p.m. Come out and show some love for the swim team.
