I would be lying to you if I told you that it’s not cold outside. I would also be lying to you if I tried to tell you that because it’s cold we should wear sweatshirts and sweatpants every day of winter. Do not think that I have never worn a sweatshirt over the winter. Trust me, I wear my fair share of sweatshirts.
However, it’s always a good idea to at least try and make an honest effort to look nice when going to class. After all, your professors ventured out in the cold, wind, and sometimes even rain or snow to teach you, so maybe you could look decent when you come to learn. How can you dress warmly without wearing six different layers of clothing? Inevitably you get all bundled up to walk to class and then once you get there it feels like it’s 100 degrees in the classroom.
For your top half, try leaving the sweatshirt for after hours and look for a nice sweater. There are many different sweater weights and styles. For those of us who are super cold all the time, go for a thick, cable-knit turtleneck sweater. For those of us who are constantly hot, try a lighter weight v-neck or crewneck sweater. There are many different sweaters that can accommodate your desired temperature while still helping you look fashionable this fall and winter.
You can opt for cashmere, wool or even a poly-cotton blend. You can also vary the neckline of your sweater for added warmth with v-neck probably being the coolest and turtleneck being the warmest. In between these two extremes there are mock turtlenecks and crewnecks.
Don’t forget that sleeve length can also make a difference. There are capped sleeves which hit just past the shoulder and long sleeves that reach the wrist, as well as three quarter length sleeves that hit just below the elbow but above the wrist, and medium length sleeves that stop just before the elbow joint.
Now for our lower half, there is not much to be said. Jeans are most peoples’ go to, however jeans can feel paper thin when those thirty-two degree days start to come, so the sneaky trick is to wear tights or pantyhose under your pants or jeans. No one will have any clue and you’ll be warm all day long. If you choose to be daring and wear a skirt I suggest you opt for a pair of tall leather or suede boots that are knee level. For added warmth you can also wear tights with this combination as well, adding depth to your outfit.
For your feet, if you want to keep your tootsies toasty I swear by Ugg boots, but I realize that those are a little out of the budget range for most college kids. So, after you put them on your holiday wish list I suggest investing in a pair of “fUGGS” as my suitemates like to refer to them. They can be found at Target stores and run from sixteen to thirty dollars. Now if you choose to not go the Ugg or fUGG route, and you are just looking for a pair of warm and comfortable socks try socks that are made with angora or microfiber.
