The Shoremen’s two game losing streak ended as quickly as it began when the Shoremen downed conference rival Gettysburg 72-65. In a must win game the team trailed by nine points at the half. It rebounded with a 24-4 run that started with a three-pointer by senior forward James Whall.
The Shoremen finally pulled away from the Bullets when sophomore Sal Schittino shot a three-pointer with 6:17 left to make it 57-47. The 24-4 run allowed the Shoremen to be up by ten with just six minutes left in the game.
In the win, seniors Andrew Chambers, Alan Kines, and Scott Hampton all scored in the double digits. Sophomores Kevin Breslin and Sal Schittino both had great games, Breslin scored 16 points and tallied eight rebounds while Schittino shot for 13 points and making three of his four three point shots. The Shoremen’s strong bench outscored the Bullets 22-9, proving the team has great depth off the bench.
The last time these two teams met, the Shoremen lost by 28 points. This time they won by seven, which has propelled them into playoff contention. With the win over the Bullets, the Shoremen knocked them out of the fourth spot in conference standings. In January, the Shoremen went 6-3 topping teams like #11 Franklin and Marshall, Muhlenberg, and Johns Hopkins who were all ranked at the top of the conference.
One of the team’s goals this year was to train hard to make the Cenntiennial Conference Championships. If it keeps up its winning streak, the odds of it making the conference championships will be very good. However, it still has some tough opponents, including rematches at home versus Franklin and Marshall and Ursinus, and an away match versus Johns Hopkins to end the regular season. The Shoremen return to the court ton Feb. 6 with a home match against Dickinson.
