Washington College sophomore Meghan Tait not only scored the Shorewomen’s basketball team’s last 13 points in its win over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference game but also hit the game, winning 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded. The Shorewomen were trailing 56-58 with five seconds left when Ursinus missed a free-throw and freshman center Erin Kile grabbed the rebound and dished it to Tait who drove up the court and swished her three-point shot just as the buzzer went off. Even though the Shorewomen trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, they continued to fight until the very end.
Ursinus led by 11 points with 5:22 left in the game when the Shorewoman began their successful comeback. While shooting a three-pointer, freshman Maggie King was fouled and made all three of her free throws to cut the lead to 52-44. Sophomore Sally O’Donnell made a layup for two more points before Tait scored the next nine points, trimming the lead to 54-50 with a little over a minute left.
Unfortunately, Ursinus was fouled and hit both free throws making the score 56-52. On the next possession, however, Tait made a layup and hit a jumper after Urisinus made two more free throws leaving the score at 56-58 before Tait made her three-pointer.
Tait scored 22 points shooting a perfect six for six from the floor in the final two minutes. Senior Julie Sherwood had a game high of 13 rebounds. The Shorewomen were 12 for 14 from the free throw line.
Although the Shorewomen lost to Gettsyburg Saturday, they beat Bryn Mawr 79-33 in the Centennial Conference Match. They wrap up their final two weeks of the season with four Centennial Conference Games. The Shorewomen will honor their seniors, Julie Sherwood, Jane O’Donnell, and Jessica Jamrogowicz, on Feb. 17 when they return for their last home game.
